USB device stack in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
USB device stack
Notes on this component
The original USB device stack. CVE family is control-transfer and descriptor handling: setup-packet parsing runs before any host authentication, so a malicious host or cable is the threat model. Advisories filed against the original stack include CVE-2021-3625 (critical: the DFU download handler overflows its buffer, fixed in 2.7.0), CVE-2023-4265 (two buffer overflows in the USB code, fixed in 3.4.0) and CVE-2021-3861 (a control transfer of up to 2048 bytes is copied into the RNDIS class's 512-byte command buffer, affecting 2.6.0, no fix version recorded). CVE-2021-3835 and CVE-2021-3966 are two more overflows in the same device-class code. A malicious host or cable reaches every one of them before any authentication happens, which is the threat model named above.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_USB_DEVICE_STACK is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.

- Ship the version with no known exploitable vulnerabilities at release. Annex I, Part I (2(a)):
- An SBOM without this subsystem under-reports what is in the image. Annex I, Part II (1):
