Shell in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
Shell
Notes on this component
The interactive shell. The finding here is usually not a CVE but the surface itself: a shell left enabled on a shipped product is an unauthenticated local command interface, normally over UART or USB. CVE family is command and argument parsing. Worth flagging in the risk assessment whenever it is present in a production build. The advisories here are filed against individual shell commands rather than the shell core: CVE-2026-1681 (pinging the device's own address through the net shell overflows the stack, affecting 4.3 and earlier), CVE-2023-6749 (unchecked input length in the settings shell, affecting 3.5 and earlier), CVE-2023-0779 (improper input validation in the net shell, affecting 3.2 and earlier), CVE-2023-4257 (unchecked input length in the Wi-Fi shell, affecting 3.4.0 and earlier) and CVE-2026-10684 (an out-of-bounds read printing a stored dump in the coredump shell, fixed in 4.3.1 and 4.4.2). Only the last records a fix version. None of them is the real finding, which stays the one above: the interface itself, unauthenticated, in a shipped build.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_SHELL is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.

- Ship the version with no known exploitable vulnerabilities at release. Annex I, Part I (2(a)):
- An SBOM without this subsystem under-reports what is in the image. Annex I, Part II (1):
