Settings subsystem in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
Settings subsystem
Notes on this component
The settings subsystem, which persists configuration (including Bluetooth pairing keys) to flash. CVE family is record parsing on load and the handling of partially written records after an interrupted write. It is also where a reviewer should ask whether the stored material is encrypted. Advisories filed against the settings subsystem: CVE-2020-13599, which is the one that answers the encryption question above — settings stored security material, Bluetooth mesh keys among it, unencrypted, and MCUmgr's file management could copy it off a device using littlefs; fixed in 2.4.0. Then CVE-2026-12634 (the NVS back end writes past a stack buffer because a read over-reports its length, fixed in 4.5.0) and CVE-2023-6749 (unchecked input length in the settings shell command, affecting 3.5 and earlier, no fix version recorded). On the releases that advisory names, the answer to the encryption question above was no.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_SETTINGS is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
