Picolibc in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
Picolibc
Notes on this component
Picolibc, a C standard library for small embedded targets and one of the C libraries Zephyr can link. It is built partly from newlib and AVR Libc code. No advisory found against Picolibc (picolibc/picolibc) as of 10 October 2026: its GitHub security advisories list is empty, no NVD record names it as the affected product, and NVD has no CPE for it. The flaws that may have come across with the copied newlib code are a family of unchecked allocations fixed in newlib 3.3.0, filed under newlib_project:newlib — CVE-2019-14871 (the REENT_CHECK macros do not check the allocation when DEBUG is unset, which is how production firmware is built), CVE-2019-14872 (_dtoa_r allocates repeatedly without checking) and CVE-2019-14873 (__multadd calls Balloc without checking it) — each a null-pointer dereference when an allocation fails. Whether Picolibc's own copy of that code was ever affected has to be compared by hand; this row does not claim either way.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Zephyr lists a west module by its west name, with no PURL or CPE. Vulnerability feeds cannot find it from that listing alone, which is why the SBOM check adds the identifiers below.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/picolibc/picolibc@{version}
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is read from the upstream release tag.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
