NVS in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
NVS
Notes on this component
The non-volatile storage key-value store, the usual back end for settings. CVE family is on-flash structure parsing and recovery from torn writes or a corrupted sector. Note the Kconfig moved to subsys/kvss/nvs in current Zephyr; the symbol name CONFIG_NVS did not change. No advisory has been filed against NVS itself as of 9 October 2026: the torn-write and recovery paths described above have not produced a published finding. The two advisories that name NVS are in the layers around it: CVE-2026-12634, where the settings subsystem's NVS back end writes past a stack buffer because a read over-reports its length (fixed in 4.5.0), and CVE-2020-13599, where settings stored security material unencrypted whatever back end it used (fixed in 2.4.0).
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_NVS is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.

CRA notes
- List this component in your SBOM. Annex I, Part II (1):
- Ship the version with no known exploitable vulnerabilities at release. Annex I, Part I (2(a)):
- An SBOM without this subsystem under-reports what is in the image. Annex I, Part II (1):
