nRF Connect SDK fork of Zephyr in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
nRF Connect SDK fork of Zephyr
Notes on this component
`upstream.vendor` is `zephyrproject`, the CPE's own upstream vendor, not Nordic Semiconductor: Nordic's SDK vendors a fork of the Zephyr Project's own kernel, and a generated SBOM should name the fork's real upstream as supplier, not the SDK that merely carries it. The nRF Connect SDK's own fork of the Zephyr kernel, pulled in by `nrf`'s `west.yml` as the `zephyr` project at `repo-path: sdk-zephyr`. Same west name as plain Zephyr, different repository and different tags (`ncs-v3.4.1`, not `v4.4.2`): Nordic backports and carries board support ahead of and sometimes behind upstream, so this is not a mirror. Flaws are still published against upstream Zephyr (GitHub security advisories on zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr, CVEs under zephyrproject:zephyr) because the fork is not independently tracked by any advisory feed; treat the matched release as an approximation of what is actually in the image, not an exact one. The `ncs-vX.Y.Z` tag a build pins is the SDK's release number, not a Zephyr version: at `ncs-v3.4.0` the fork's own `VERSION` file says Zephyr 4.4.0 (github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-zephyr/blob/ncs-v3.4.0/VERSION, read 11 October 2026). A west manifest does not carry that file, so no Zephyr version is read from such a tag; the older `v3.7.99-ncs2` tag shape does state the Zephyr version in front of the suffix and is read.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Zephyr lists a west module by its west name, with no PURL or CPE. Vulnerability feeds cannot find it from that listing alone, which is why the SBOM check adds the identifiers below.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/nrfconnect/sdk-zephyr@{version}cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: zephyrproject.
