nRF Connect SDK fork of OpenThread in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
nRF Connect SDK fork of OpenThread
Notes on this component
`upstream.vendor` is `google`, the CPE's own upstream vendor, not Nordic Semiconductor: Nordic's SDK vendors a fork of Google's project, and a generated SBOM should name the fork's real upstream as supplier, not the SDK that merely carries it. NCS's own fork of OpenThread, at `repo-path: sdk-openthread`, `path: modules/lib/openthread` — distinct from Zephyr's own fork (the plain `openthread` row) under the same west name; `rowForProject` tells them apart by repository. Pinned to a raw commit, so only a commit id is available. The `ncs-openthread-nordic-library` subsystem row is a SEPARATE component: the precompiled per-SoC OpenThread libraries in nrfxlib, selected by `CONFIG_OPENTHREAD_NORDIC_LIBRARY` instead of building this source. The upstream advisories are filed on openthread/openthread and under google:openthread: CVE-2023-2626 / GHSA-vr3r-363g-72j9 (a border router accepts frames built with the static-key "Key ID Mode 2", so an unauthenticated node puts arbitrary IPv6 packets on the Thread network; fixed upstream in commit 3d5cb36) and CVE-2019-20791 (a stack buffer overflow in MeshCoP::Commissioner::GeneratePskc, before the 2019-12-13 release). Whether this fork carries either fix was NOT checked for this row: it pins a raw commit and nothing in sdk-openthread states which upstream commit it merged.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Zephyr lists a west module by its west name, with no PURL or CPE. Vulnerability feeds cannot find it from that listing alone, which is why the SBOM check adds the identifiers below.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/nrfconnect/sdk-openthread@{version}cpe:2.3:o:google:openthread:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is pinned to the upstream commit your build uses.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: google.
