nanopb in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
nanopb
Notes on this component
nanopb, Protocol Buffers for small devices: it encodes and decodes messages in very little code, so it sits directly on whatever wire input the device accepts. Flaws are published as GitHub security advisories on nanopb/nanopb and as CVEs under nanopb_project:nanopb. The two most serious were filed in August 2026 and neither has a CVE, so a CPE-only check misses both: GHSA-p24j-vqcp-x988 (a callback field inside a `oneof` can make the decoder call through an attacker-controlled function pointer; fixed in 0.4.9.2) and GHSA-9w99-4pfq-6396 (cyclic messages drive unbounded recursion; fixed in 0.4.9.2). Before those, CVE-2024-53984 / GHSA-xwqq-qxmw-hj5r (memory is not released on an error return when PB_DECODE_DELIMITED is used; fixed in 0.4.9.1) and CVE-2021-21401 / GHSA-7mv5-5mxh-qg88 (an invalid free() with oneofs and PB_ENABLE_MALLOC; fixed in 0.3.9.8 and 0.4.5).
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Zephyr lists a west module by its west name, with no PURL or CPE. Vulnerability feeds cannot find it from that listing alone, which is why the SBOM check adds the identifiers below.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/nanopb/nanopb@{version}cpe:2.3:a:nanopb_project:nanopb:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is read from the upstream release tag.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
