MCUmgr in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
MCUmgr
Notes on this component
MCUmgr, the device management layer used for firmware update over BLE, UART or UDP. CVE family is SMP protocol decoding (CBOR payloads) and the image-upload path, which has had authentication and bounds findings. Treat it as a privileged interface: it can replace firmware. Advisories filed against MCUmgr include CVE-2026-18747 (an integer underflow of the buffer length in the serial transport leads to an out-of-bounds read, fixed in 4.4.2), CVE-2026-15892 (the settings-management handlers leak heap memory each time an access hook rejects a request, until the device is out of memory, fixed in 4.4.2) and CVE-2026-10648 (the serial transport dereferences null when the buffer pool is exhausted, fixed in 4.4.1). All three are reachable over the management transport itself, which is the interface that can replace firmware. CVE-2020-13599 is the related finding that what MCUmgr could read off a device was stored unencrypted.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_MCUMGR is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.

- Ship the version with no known exploitable vulnerabilities at release. Annex I, Part I (2(a)):
- An SBOM without this subsystem under-reports what is in the image. Annex I, Part II (1):
