CAN in Zephyr firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
CAN
Notes on this component
The CAN subsystem and its drivers. CVE family is frame handling in the drivers and the ISO-TP transport above them. CAN has no authentication of its own, so a bug here is reachable by anything on the bus. Advisories filed against CAN include CVE-2026-5071 (a local denial of service through a SocketCAN send, affecting 4.3 and earlier), CVE-2023-3725 (a buffer overflow in the CAN subsystem, affecting 3.4.0 and earlier) and CVE-2022-2741 (a crafted frame denies service, affecting 3.1 and earlier). None of the three records a fix version, so the affected range is what the advisory states; CVE-2023-5563 is the matching driver fault, where a bus-off event raises a fatal exception.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
It is compiled into the kernel image when CONFIG_CAN is y. It does not appear in west spdx output; the only trace is the .config file in your build directory.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:zephyrproject:zephyr:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the same as your Zephyr version.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
