xerces-c in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
xerces-c
Notes on this component
Xerces-C++ is the Apache Software Foundation's validating XML parser, a shared library that applications call to read, write and validate XML documents through DOM and SAX interfaces. Because it parses documents it is handed, the reachable surface is the XML that reaches the application. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is xerces-c++ (with the plus signs escaped) and no vendor, so a lookup has to match that exact product name.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:*:xerces-c\+\+:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: not recorded. The recipe names the product but not who publishes it, and we do not guess vendors. A * vendor matches records for any product called xerces-c\+\+, including unrelated ones.
