wpa-supplicant in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
wpa-supplicant
Notes on this component
wpa_supplicant is the background daemon that negotiates keys and controls roaming and association for a Wi-Fi client, with support for WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and IEEE 802.1X, and the project says it suits embedded systems. The project page links a list of security advisories. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT gives the product name wpa_supplicant with no vendor, so the CPE built from it has a wildcard vendor and a lookup has to match on the product name alone.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:*:wpa_supplicant:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: not recorded. The recipe names the product but not who publishes it, and we do not guess vendors. A * vendor matches records for any product called wpa_supplicant, including unrelated ones.
