rust-cross-canadian in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
rust-cross-canadian
Notes on this component
rust-cross-canadian is the Rust compiler packaged for the SDK, the toolset handed to developers so that they can build for the device from their own computers. It is a cross-canadian recipe, which is how Yocto names a tool built to run on the developer machine instead of the device. It runs on the build host while the image is being built and is not part of the image that ships on the device, so a CVE against it concerns the machine that built the firmware rather than the firmware itself; it is still worth knowing about, and it is not a device vulnerability. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is rust with no vendor, so a lookup matches on the product name rust alone.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:*:rust:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: not recorded. The recipe names the product but not who publishes it, and we do not guess vendors. A * vendor matches records for any product called rust, including unrelated ones.
