python3-web3 in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
python3-web3
Notes on this component
python3-web3 is web3.py, the Python library for talking to an Ethereum node over HTTP, WebSocket or IPC. It runs inside the Python programs that import it, and it handles the responses of the node it connects to, so it matters when a device holds keys or sends transactions. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is ethereum web3.py, so a lookup uses vendor ethereum and product web3.py.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:ethereum:web3.py:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
