python3-grpcio-tools in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
python3-grpcio-tools
Notes on this component
python3-grpcio-tools is the gRPC code generator, which turns .proto interface definitions into Python source during the build. The generated code is what ships, and the generator is not. It runs on the build host while the image is being built and is not part of the image that ships on the device, so a CVE against it concerns the machine that built the firmware rather than the firmware itself; it is still worth knowing about, and it is not a device vulnerability. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is grpc grpc, so a lookup uses vendor grpc and product grpc.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:grpc:grpc:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: grpc.
