netcat in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
netcat
Notes on this component
netcat is the command line tool that opens TCP or UDP connections and listens on a port, often used for debugging and in shell scripts. It is a general-purpose network tool in the image rather than a service, and it matters mainly because a script or a person on the device can use it to move data or open a listener. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is netcat_project netcat, so a lookup uses vendor netcat_project and product netcat.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:netcat_project:netcat:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
