mdns in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
mdns
Notes on this component
mDNSResponder is Apple's open-source implementation of multicast DNS and DNS Service Discovery, the daemon that lets a device announce itself and find printers and other services on the local network without a DNS server. It answers packets from any host on the same network, which is its attack surface. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT pair is apple:mdnsresponder, so a lookup uses the vendor apple and the product name mdnsresponder.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:apple:mdnsresponder:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
