linux-yocto in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
linux-yocto
Notes on this component
linux-yocto is the Yocto Project's build of the Linux kernel. The kernel project asks for security bugs by email to security@kernel.org, states that this team does not assign CVEs, and sends reporters to a separate kernel CVE team for one. The recipe sets no CVE_PRODUCT; linux:linux_kernel was entered by hand, and it names the whole kernel, so a record applies only if the affected driver or feature is built into your image. The identifier's part is "o" (operating system), which is how NVD files the kernel: its CPE dictionary, asked on 2026-10-11 at https://services.nvd.nist.gov/rest/json/cpes/2.0?cpeMatchString=cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel, returned 6,513 names for part "o" and 52 for part "a" (application), the first of those marked deprecated.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
