giflib in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
giflib
Notes on this component
giflib is a small library for reading and writing GIF images, in use since 1989 in web browsers, game consoles and embedded systems. The project describes it as mature code that needs only occasional bug fixes. The recipe sets giflib_project:giflib; version 5.x changed the API for thread safety, so check which major version your image ships.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:giflib_project:giflib:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
