gcc in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
gcc
Notes on this component
gcc is the GNU Compiler Collection, the C and C++ compiler that turns source code into the machine code of the image. It runs on the build host while the image is being built and is not part of the image that ships on the device, so a CVE against it concerns the machine that built the firmware rather than the firmware itself; it is still worth knowing about, and it is not a device vulnerability. The device carries only the programs this compiler produced, so a CVE in the compiler concerns the code it generates and the build host, and not a compiler on the device. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT is gcc with no vendor, so a lookup matches on the product name gcc alone.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:*:gcc:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
Honest gaps
Vendor: not recorded. The recipe names the product but not who publishes it, and we do not guess vendors. A * vendor matches records for any product called gcc, including unrelated ones.
