coreutils in Yocto firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
·
What it is
coreutils
Notes on this component
GNU Coreutils provides the basic file, shell and text commands (ls, cp, rm, chmod, sort and so on) that many firmware images use for their scripts when they do not use BusyBox. The project page points to its bug reporting channel and its source repositories. The recipe's CVE_PRODUCT pair is gnu:coreutils, so the CPE built from it carries the vendor gnu and a lookup should use both names.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
Yocto lists it by recipe name. Vulnerability databases file the same code under a vendor:product pair taken from the recipe's CVE_PRODUCT, so the two names often differ.
The identifiers we assign
cpe:2.3:a:gnu:coreutils:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build. The version is the recipe version in your image.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
