Mbed TLS in ESP-IDF firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
What it is
Mbed TLS
Notes on this component
ESP-IDF vendors its own fork (espressif/mbedtls, patches on top of upstream Mbed-TLS/mbedtls) as a submodule with no sbom.yml of its own, so esp-idf-sbom ships it with no identifier in older builds. Current esp-idf-sbom reads an identifier for it from the component's own sbom.yml (checked 2026-10-07: espressif/mbedtls/sbom.yml carries cpe:2.3:a:arm:mbed_tls and cpe:2.3:a:trustedfirmware:mbed_tls), so this row is the fallback for a document that predates that, not the usual case.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
ESP-IDF records it from the component's own sbom.yml file, so what the SBOM says depends on what that file declares.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/Mbed-TLS/mbedtls@{version}cpe:2.3:a:arm:mbed_tls:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
