freetype in ESP-IDF firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
What it is
freetype
Notes on this component
Espressif's Component Registry packaging of the upstream FreeType font rendering engine, for a project that pulls it in as a managed dependency rather than vendoring the source itself. Not a thin wrapper with no security record: FreeType has over a hundred filed NVD CVEs spanning malformed-font parsing bugs (integer overflows, out-of-bounds reads) across its BDF, SFNT, CFF, PCF and other format handlers. Its CVEs are filed under `freetype:freetype`, the same pair used for upstream FreeType.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
ESP-IDF records it from the component's own sbom.yml file, so what the SBOM says depends on what that file declares.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/freetype/freetype@{version}cpe:2.3:a:freetype:freetype:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
