Mbed TLS in ESP-IDF firmware: identifiers and CRA notes
What it is
Mbed TLS
Notes on this component
ESP-IDF's thin TLS abstraction (the `esp-tls` component) is first-party ESP-IDF code with no upstream of its own, but its default and overwhelmingly common build (CONFIG_ESP_TLS_USING_MBEDTLS, on by default) is a wrapper over the vendored mbedtls component, so a missing identifier is filled with that CPE rather than esp-idf's own. A build set to CONFIG_ESP_TLS_USING_WOLFSSL instead links wolfSSL (a managed component, `espressif/wolfssl` or the project's own pin), and this entry misidentifies that case: esp-idf-sbom's output does not say which backend was selected, so check the backend setting in your own build.
Where it hides in a firmware SBOM
ESP-IDF records it from the component's own sbom.yml file, so what the SBOM says depends on what that file declares.
The identifiers we assign
pkg:github/Mbed-TLS/mbedtls@{version}cpe:2.3:a:arm:mbed_tls:{version}:*:*:*:*:*:*:*
{version} is filled in from your build.
The SBOM check adds these identifiers to a component your build listed without them.
